History in Key Stage 1

During Key Stage 1 children develop an awareness of the past using words and phrases related to the passing of time. Children learn about their own lives, about their families and friends in the recent past and about people and events from the more distant past. They learn about significant individual’s lives and lifestyles. Children find out about events from the recent and more distant past, including those from both Britain and the wider world. They listen and respond to stories and use sources of information to help them ask and answer questions. Children will look at cause and consequence and what it was like to live in the distant past. They learn how the past is different from the present and identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods. Throughout the key stage children will explore historical sources, especially the pictorial and the artefactual.
